Blog Stats

My blog has had another attack of interest in Sleeping Beauty images - which has resulted in it climbing to number 7 in the Amatomu rankings! The number of hits has started falling off again, so we will see what happens with the ranking.
I am fascinated by the algorithms used by google and co. If I was younger, maybe I would choose to study that sort of thing!

Myself, I'm thoroughly confused by rankings and hits and so on. By some accounts, 10,000 people looked in on my blog, by others, 70,000, and goodness knows who else syphoned off blog posts, and so on. Doesn't somebody out there have a simple guide to these things? I was of course stunned to see Jenny Hillebrand knocking me off the charts. You understand that this is the kind of thing that leads to lifelong feuds? ;-)

I think that the Technorati tab on the Amatomu page gives a better understanding of readership.
Part of the problem with blog stats is that it doesn't measure current readership. An old blog scores hits because it has more material and will be picked up in searches more often. Even if the searcher doesn't follow the link. Which is why inactive blogs can still be ranked high. And Google feeds on itself. It sends people to a page, then registers that that page has a high number of hits, so it sends people to that page . . .

Incidentally my amatomu has been stuck for a week, and no stats available. I sent amacoma a friendly e-mail to ask what was up. I presume everybody's experiencing this.

I tried it and it also crashes for me. Oh well, at least we don't do this for a living.
